Hi Dave. Few points I noticed 1. There is no way of telling which folder you are currently looking at. Could do with some bold headers at the top of the mail client, or alternativley highlight the folder your on in the list on the left hand side? 2.I reckon you could do with some rollovers on your buttons, like 'send' 'delete' etc. 3. On your prompts, it reads 'go back to inbox'. use the words 'return to' instead. sounds better 4. Could do to highlight error fields. eg. I put a invalid email address into the add contacts field deliberatly to see what happened. The error message comes up on the screen above the fields, but maybe you could highlight the indvidual field that needs re-doing? 5. Your logout tooltip button is to long. It drifts out of screen when you hover over it. Maybe just change it to read 'logout'? people will get the message. 6. The move email drop down list needs aligning to sit central to the yellow bar. the words on the left hand side are, but the list and the 'move mail' link are at the top of the bar 7. Could create some mail notifacations like google mail. so when you send an email, or delete it, a little notifacation pops up telling user its sent, or deleted. 8. In the folders, when there are no mails left in there, it says ' no emails in x folder'. take the rollovers off these. Hope thats helped. I'll keep looking and let you kno if I find anything else. few things that i'm not a fan of... and i couldn't be bothered to read the reply by mike so there could be some overlap, who knows! so yeah i'm really not too keen on some of your colour choices, blue is far too over used lol but my main issue lies with the dirty/dull shade of orange, and the grey for the email header information... i think u seriously need to reconsider changes on those, which being css shouldn't take you long :) I'd also like you to reconsider the email link colours as well, but i dont know if i'm just being picky! The TO: field (if multiple) only shows the first email address and no others. Loading times of my inbox are a bit tedious? i know i've got a lot of mail but still... I'd prefer to have the link to my Inbox at the top of the side menu and not last in the list... last but not least, the tooltip on the last icons in the top right cause a horizontal scrollbar...evil other than that...nice one
I couldn't use it with hotmail, so i used ur dummy account! Overall, good matey, design, layout and useabulity are very good!! All of the icons, are very good design wise, and you know what your looking at without thinking about it really! Another thing, i dont know if it was my comp, but is there anyway of recognising which page you are on? Like if i was on "sent" how would i know? Also, how come "inbox" is all capitals? Hi Dave, been using bad apple again with a new email address Ive just aquired! One thing that might be worth having is the number of new messages you have in your inbox in brackets at the side of the folder list on the left. i.e. INBOX (4) Another point maybe be to put a 'total number of emails' at the bottom or top of each folder so users know how many they have in each folder in total? Teedious I know but in terms of useability, some sad soul (me) will want to know how many emails they have! hope this has helped Mike

Just to reiterate what some of the others have said. Function wise i couldn't find anything wrong, however some of the tool tips looked quite untidy and the log out icon is unreadable because of the screen run off. The design could be polished up a bit like Jamie said. I also noticed that some of the terminology used isnt consistent throughout and some of it could be confusing.For instance when i roll over the create new email and then click it i go to a page that says compose email at the top. Maybe have the tool tip say the same thing it will give a nice continuity and will give you shorter snappier tool tips. I think you should also change INBOX to lower case like the rest of the list items. Ill keep popping back to see how its going and try and find other things you could change or improve. Hope it helped.
Thanks for the feedback guys its really useful to have. I am going to be going through all the points raised and make changes where needed. I am not concerned with the design as this will be getting changed at a later date. Using Bad Apple Mail The Subject viewing area is to wide. Best shorten it so you wont need to use scroll bar at bottem to view From, Date and Size sections. Hyperlinks Maybe change the way hyperlinks are inserted. The links menu box has to many options. You could have it so when user clicks edit/insert hyperlink. You give one option. Such as address: under this maybe a little box which says http:// User just copys and paste next to it. Simple for thick people. Attachments Needs a few ajustments I sent an image that was fine. You could do with an indication that it's added successfully. I recieved an MP3 song and for some reason Bad Apple was reading it as an image (jpg) so doesn't work. Tried sending an MP3 in an e-mail. This is what I got after waiting a long time. Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 11971894 bytes) in /home3/webguide/public_html/badapplemail/mail/assets/pages/compose.php on line 132 After checking other e-mail address I still got the song yet I got the message above. I thought it had failed with having a fatel error message after I had sent e-mail very confusing and would get annoying too. Need a confirmation or something to let the user know it's attached and one for failed. Inbox I got an e-mail was going to reply back but there is no reply back button anywhere or forward buttons. Will you be adding them? My inbox looks a right mess here for example =?iso-8859-1?q?hmv=2Ecom?= that should be hmv.com. Here's one with getting a message from YouTube =?iso-8859-1?q?ILoveAlexKrycek92_has_posted_a_comment_to_your_profile?= That should be ILoveAlexKrycek92 has posted a comment to your profile. From other e-mail address When recieving mail. Instead of getting it of the person who send it. I get this webguide@box507.bluehost.com I'm thinking it would be better so youcan see the e-mail address sent from. Moving selected e-mails Moving one e-mail to drafts, inbox etc works great but when you add 2 or more then you only get the first one selected moved. Composing e-mail I can only send e-mails to one person at a time. Would be great if you can send a few e-mails at same time. I got this when sending a message at 17.39. I got this reply once I hit send. Warning: Wrong parameter count for imap_append() in /home3/webguide/public_html/badapplemail/mail/assets/pages/compose.php on line 139 your email has been sent Checked other e-mail recieved it fine. Why this message? Delete selected e-mails Deleting function works fine but doesn't move e-mails to trash. Not good if deleting the wrong e-mail can't get it back again. Manage mailbox folders This part works great. Sorry I deleted spam. I had a choice of edit or delete so tried delete. It worked oops sorry. Adding Contact Works great nice and smoove very easy. Importing contacts Tried and failed. Maybe because my contacts are from my hotmail account. Exporting contacts Easy and very simple. Mailing list Easy to create add people and delete. Very confusing to actully get to the mailing list once created. Most people wouldn't dare touch edit/delete button in case they screw it up. Took me a while to figure out and tested it by sending to my other e-mail with using the title for contacts which was selected on the list. Didn't work. Maybe I did something wrong I don't know. Information box that appears This feature is annoying but useful at the same time. Best not using over the folders area. For logging out you don't need Log out end of session. A simple Logout is enough. Maybe I found a few faults but I love the clean and very simple looking layout and the colours makes you want to use Bad Apple Mail. Over all I love it. Once it's working smoothly I'd be more than happy to use it.
Just to add what about adding the name of the different icons that are being used to help aid people who may not know what the icons are, even though they are self explanatory just to add a bit userbillty. Also i had a little trouble sigining in using gmail but this could be due to the connection from my end but got othere then that fine mate
Yo Dave, Here goes the 4th set of user testing :P The select all tickbox for emails needs aligning with the other individual ones. Folders menu on the left could use icons before the text and odd/even background colouring to help define the look better. Same with Contacts menu. The move mail drop down needs aligning in its container properly as its touching the top on my screen. The navigation images at the top right ned to be top middle as the title attributes for the logout images crumple over and break when hugging teh edge of teh screen. On viewing an email the previous & back quick links dont have title attributes. Thats all i could find this time round bud.
Ben Harrington's comments First of all, first impressions are good with the design and the simple email navigation which allows me to select what I want when I want without having to navigate through lots of sections (EG. viewing inbox/outbox folders i simply click on that) email layout is easy to read and pleasing to the eye using my gmail account, i noticed that as Gmail uses a text expander to show replies etc the formatting comes wierd when I view these styles of email using badapple and some formatting error that comes up with the email cc side Ben Harrington harrington.ben@gmail.com> in drafts folder... the drafts i have saved in gmail do not display (although thats probably a gmail server issue, not badapplemails fault) no emails shown in sent mail... again could be a gmail issue I really like the contacts layout and the ease of use to add contacts to your list... is it possible to import the contacts you have in other email clients such as gmail so I dont have to re-add them? tried to send an email to my hotmail account, does it not work in real time or does the server have to process it as the email did not show up in my hotmail inbox straight away? all in all, very impressive and I'd definately use it when it goes live Hope this helps :)

While using this email reader I have had problems with folders as I am unable to move more than one email at a time to a folder, the move option say move selected emails so I assume that means I should be able to move more than 1 at a time. Also on the inbox page scroll bars are created when email titles are very long particularly emails I receive from amazon. This pushes the sender and date right out of view so I need to scroll to the bottom of the page, side scroll and scroll back up if I want to see the details before I open. Otherwise a nice application you have here.

On the login screen you have to tab past the question marks, it needs to tab from email straight to password. Pagination! lol also the table is massively wider than the area it's displayed in so there's a long horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the page... inbox needs to be the first item in the list :) text in the rows could look nicer if it was vertically aligned to the middle?

Got pagination working with email listings now, Emails are now limited to 20 per page. That's been my longest problem I've had with this project right from the start. Really didn't want to store emails in a database to get it to work and now I don't have to. Also Inbox should always be the first folder in the list now.

Sup dude. I was on your site today accessing my hotmail email. Two quick things. 1. All my old emails are on the first page and my newest email are all the way on the last page and 2. when i try to navigate between pages i get an error message saying. "login only allowed every 15 minutes" and then I cant do anything

I've fixed the issue with the email ordering thanks for bringing that up. I cannot do anything about the login time as hotmail uses pop access and that's a limitation with pop. If hotmail ever release IMAP access I'll be able to improve it so much!
